17-year-old girl dies after falling off cliff while taking sunset photos
A teenager fell to her death from a cliff in Australia after trying to get a better view of the sunset for photos.
As reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the 17-year-old fell off a cliff at Moffat Beach, Queensland, last Dec. 13.
The still unidentified teen had critical injuries and died on the spot, according to Queensland authorities, while a woman sustained a minor injury as she helped the girl before emergency services arrived at the scene.
The girl was with a group of teenagers watching the sunset when the incident happened, Detective Acting Inspector Peter Hocken told the media outlet.
"They went over the railing to get a better view of the sunset, taking photos," Hocken said. "They’ve proceeded to make their way back up the embankment, and unfortunately, a 17-year-old has slipped and fallen 30 meters onto the rocks below."
He added that the teenager’s friends and other witnesses provided immediate first aid.
"They’re young girls … doing nothing other than enjoying life," he said. "Unfortunately, one wrong footstep has caused her to fall."
According to the Queensland website, Moffat Beach is described as a lesser-known destination on the Sunshine Coast and is not patrolled.
