Heads up, travelers: Airfares are increasing this October as fuel surcharge rises
Travelers planning flights in the first half of October should prepare for higher ticket prices as the Civil Aeronautics Board has announced a fuel surcharge hike.
According to the latest advisory, the airline fuel surcharge will climb from Level 14 to Level 17 for the period of Oct. 1 to 15.
This rate increase means passengers will pay an additional P559 to P1,635 on top of their base fare for domestic routes. Meanwhile, international flights will see an added charge ranging from P1,846.10 to P13,726.58, depending on the destination's distance.
The fuel surcharge is a temporary fee allowed by the CAB so airlines can recover losses from sudden spikes in jet fuel expenses. Airlines planning to collect this extra charge must submit an official application before Oct. 1, and any fees charged in foreign currency will use a fixed exchange rate of P62.71 to US$1.
The rate increase follows renewed tensions in the Middle East after US president Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
