A boxer died after losing consciousness during a fight.

BBC News reported that 40-year-old boxer Oluwasegun Olanrewaju of Nigeria died in the middle if his bout against Jonathan Mbanugu of Ghana last weekend. They had a light heavyweight match during the Ghana Professional Boxing League held at Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.

Per the media outlet, it was during the third round when the boxer fell over backward into the ropes and collapsed.

Olanrewaju was given medical assistance by the ringside doctor and paramedics.

He was rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was declared dead moments later.

Reacting to his death, Remi Aboderin—the general secretary of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control—said, "We are really devastated."

"[This] is not something we envisaged. We will live up to our responsibility and make sure that we stand [by] the family," he continued.

Aboderin described Olanrewaju as a "fearless" fighter who breathed his last as a "ring warrior.

Known as "Success" in the boxing scene, BBC News said Oluwasegun had an official record of 23 fights—with 13 wins and eight losses.
