Incheon International Airport cancels plan to open exclusive gates for celebrities

The Incheon International Airport has decided to cancel its plan to open an exclusive gate for celebrities amid public backlash over perceived preferential treatment for famous people.

“In light of diverse opinions raised during the parliamentary audit and media coverage, we will not implement the special entry procedure for high-profile individuals causing dense crowds, which was scheduled for October 28,” the corporation announced in a press release obtained by Korean outlet Naver on Oct. 27.

The company added that it would seek further feedback and examine overseas airport methods to improve safety and manage crowd congestion.

Earlier this week, Incheon International Airport reached out to entertainment agencies, urging them to use the exclusive gates. According to the corporation, celebrities and public figures who apply in advance will have access to a designated departure gate beginning Oct. 28.

However, the announcement of a special gate for celebrities sparked debate among netizens online.

On X, users have mixed reactions, with some supporting the policy so idols don't get "harassed" or "mobbed" by the public.

“The difference in mentalities again... international fans rooting for this to become the norm so idols are safe and comfortable, meanwhile korean fans complaining bcs of 'preferential' treatment... so everyone deserves to get mobbed? Cool,” an X user wrote.

“So you prefer public opinion and idols getting harassed and mobbed by obsessed stalkers? I thought the airport had a say in what they can implement and not listen to stalkers and paparazzi. I guess safety means zero to you. Weird,” another added.

Meanwhile, others said that all passengers should be treated the same.

"It's important for airports to prioritize fair treatment for all passengers, regardless of their status or fame. It's understandable that opening a separate gate for celebrities could be seen as giving preferential treatment," said one user.

The policy was implemented following instances where fans gathered at Incheon Airport to catch a glimpse of celebrities, resulting in various incidents that led some celebrities to adopt heightened security measures.

Earlier in July, actor Byeon Woo-seok was involved in an airport incident after his security team blocked gates, directed flashlights at passengers, and performed ticket and passport checks without proper authorization.
