Hann Casino: Design-forward for the future and beyond

By PINKY S. ICAMEN Published Dec 15, 2021 9:15 am

As movement for leisure slowly begins after almost two years into the pandemic, a safe and rewarding escape awaits those who play bold and live boldly.

Welcoming discerning guests is Hann Casino Resort, the first fully integrated resort found in the expansive Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga that features nature-inspired designs and is outfitted with technology that aligns with the ever-changing needs of the pandemic times and the demands of a post-pandemic world.

Within the resort is Hann Casino, whose interiors—particularly its front-of-house areas, including the lobby—feature elements inspired by the majestic mountains and lush tropical forest that cradle the area.

These elements are translated into modern design, characterized by minimalist clean lines and geometric forms that create an effect of comfort and curiosity.

Hann Casino’s design was born out of the lessons brought by the pandemic, among them is nature and technology can both be harnessed to ensure one’s well-being.

With this inspiration, Hann Group, owner and developer of the Widus Hotel & Casino and the Clark Marriott in Clark Freeport Zone, tapped the expertise of Aedas Interiors Limited HK, which is known for designing the Hong Kong International Airport Midfield Concourse and the Langham in Shenzhen, among others.

"Integrating Clark's tropical forests and jagged mountains into the development's interiors keeps Hann Casino close to the heart of the locals, as well as creates a refreshing experience for the foreign guests," said Alan Hamilton, Director of Aedas Interiors Limited HK.

Committed to sustainability

Hann Casino’s inspired-by-nature theme is not just superficial as it uses materials in its design that ensure minimal waste, less energy consumption, and less impact on the environment.

First, sustainable materials were used to achieve the development’s design. Like the timber veneer—which was used for most of the surfaces of the casino’s front-of-house areas—that was sourced from sustainably managed forests and plantations.

These materials are FSC Chain-of-Custody certified, which means the path of the sustainable building materials from the forests was traced and verified.

Additionally, the paint used in the resort is Singapore Green Building Product certified. The certification ensures that the paint has met green standards and is, indeed, sustainable.

Air quality matters

In these uncertain times and beyond, winning guests’ trust is vital and providing a safe haven for a much-needed joyful escape matters.

Hann Group believes that in a post-pandemic world, air quality matters, especially in a place like a casino that can get crowded, risking a potential transmission of COVID-19.

To address this concern, Hann Group tapped Forsspac, an engineering design and commissioning company focused on building services and systems, that used Underfloor Air Distribution (UFAD) to provide excellent air quality in the gaming areas.

"This means that the air in the casino is continually cleaned of pollutants including tobacco smoke, volatile organic compounds, and critically, airborne pathogens, including the SARS-CoV-2 virus which causes COVID-19," said Philip J. Thoburn, MCIBSE, MAPM, CEng, CEO and technical director, Forsspac.

With the system, the air is continually replaced from the floor and all airborne pollutants and pathogens are removed by extraction at the ceiling, according to Thoburn.

“Even when there is some re-circulation of the air, the filtration in the air handling plant is high efficient, providing greater than 98% removal of airborne particulates and pathogens, virtually eliminating the buildup of such pathogens, including the SARS-CoV-2 virus, in the occupied spaces," he explained.

Energy efficiency

The leisure destination stays committed to sustainability, identifying the biggest consumer of electricity in its development—air conditioners.

With this, ceiling-mounted sensors by Forsspac are installed in the casino spaces to detect occupancy levels and instruct the system to adjust airflow accordingly.

In conventionally conditioned areas, carbon dioxide is monitored and used to control the outdoor air supply against occupancy levels.

"This ensures the quality of the air is maintained while also reducing the energy consumed in keeping the areas comfortable," Thoburn said.

This mechanism is also used in Hann Casino's parking area, where carbon monoxide is monitored to limit the energy consumed in ventilation.

In other areas of the development where conventional air conditioning systems are used, all recirculated air is filtered and diluted with pre-treated outdoor air.

With the systems in place, Hann management assures its compliance with local COVID-19 regulations, which also shows its commitment to the health and safety of its guests.

"With Hann Casino's design, we want to prioritize environmental sustainability and quality guest experience,. We will continue to prioritize the indoor health of our developments even after the acute crisis of the pandemic has passed," said Daesik Han, chairman and CEO, Hann Philippines Inc.

Hann Casino is a part of Hann Casino Resort, the first premium sub-brand under the master brand Hann Resorts. Besides Hann Casino, the first fully integrated resort in Clark also features Clark Marriott, Swissotel Clark, and, in a few years, Mercure Hotel.
