The Louvre drops entire 482,000 art collection online

Virtual museum date, anyone?

The Musée du Louvre in Paris, France has opened their entire gallery database for free online viewing—everything from their paintings, sculptures, jewelry, and even textiles.

The museum's collections database is made up of 482,000 pieces from the Louvre itself, the Musée National Eugène-Delacroix, the Tuileries and Carrousel gardens sculptures, and the MNR, or Musées Nationaux Récupération.

Navigating the site is easy enough, as virtual tourists can access the site via collections.louvre.fr, where they'll be greeted by a straightforward search bar, a rundown of the museum's collection categories, and then some albums containing a variety of themed artworks.

The site also contains an interactive map of the sprawling museum.

“Today, the Louvre is dusting off its treasures, even the least-known,” Musée du Louvre President-Director Jean-Luc Martinez shared in a statement.

“For the first time, anyone can access the entire collection of works from a computer or smartphone for free, whether they are on display in the museum, on loan, even long-term, or in storage. The Louvre’s stunning cultural heritage is all now just a click away!”

Along with the database, the museum has also ushered in a newly modernized website design.
