Joe Biden’s two German shepherds star in funny Christmas video
US President-elect Joe Biden and wife Dr. Jill Biden released earlier this week a funny Christmas video featuring their two dogs, Champ and Major Biden.
Both German Shepherds, the dogs can’t be any more different in temperament. The older Champ is chill and relaxed, sprawled under the Christmas tree with chew toys around him, while Major runs wildly around the house like he’s chasing a squirrel.
Biden captioned the video on his Instagram account with. “No matter how you’re celebrating this year, Champ and Major wish you a Merry Christmas.”
With the song We Wish You a Merry Christmas alternating between a mellow, slow version for Champ and then fast-cutting to a fast, rock version for Major, the video shows that same-breed dogs don’t always have the same attitude.
As Major races up and down the stairs and around the tree with a plush toy in his mouth, Champ looks on sleepily and never once gets up to join the younger dog in his shenanigans.
Major and Champ Biden are the soon-to-be DOTUS (Dogs of the United States) when Biden becomes the 46th POTUS on Jan. 20, 2021. The Biden dogs signal the return of pets to the White House since Obama’s Portuguese water dogs Bo and Sunny from 2008 to 2016.
Trump didn’t have a dog in the White House—the first US president in 150 years to not have a pet during his term—which the Biden campaign capitalized on as they courted the votes of dog lovers.
A dog lover sice he was a kid—specifically German Shepherd dogs—Biden celebrated National Cat Day last October by posting a picture of a dog! “It’s time to bring a pet back to the White House!” he captioned his post.
Major is a former shelter dog that the Bidens adopted from the Delaware Humane Association, two years after initially fostering him.
Big dogs, along with certain breeds like Pitbulls, stay longer in shelters because they have a harder time finding forever homes compared to smaller dogs.
And now this energetic giant is heading to the White House, where he and his brother Champ will have hoomans around them 24/7—to walk them, feed them, play with them, and most importantly, to boop them.
Champ, who is 12 years old, has been with the Biden family since he was a puppy and shortly before Biden was elected vice president.
"I've had German shepherds since I was a kid and I've actually trained them and shown them in the past," then Vice President Biden told ABC in 2008.
It was Biden’s grandchildren who named the puppy “Champ” when they were visiting at Christmas.
It’s also a nickname Biden’s own father used to call him. "Any time you get knocked down, champ — get up!" his father would tell him.
