Let kids be messy: Breeze LarOlympics champions active outdoor play without limits

At this year’s Breeze LarOlympics, the Marikina Sports Center buzzed with activity. Children raced across chalk-drawn lines, their slippers flying; their clothes quickly covered in mud and dust under the scorching sun. They played without hesitation, embodying the powerful message that rang clear across the field: stains should never stop kids from playing.
The event was a partnership initiated by Breeze, working with the Knowledge Channel Foundation Inc. Held on Nov. 28, the Breeze LarOlympics carried the inspiring theme, “Sige sa Mantsa, Tuloy ang Laro.”
Over a hundred children from 14 elementary schools—consisting of students from grades four to six—joined the fun. They played traditional Filipino games that required teamwork and cooperation like agawan base, agawang panyo, the classic tumbang preso, and an intense round of sipa, where team members earned points by taking turns tossing the shuttlecock-like ball.
Although the field was muddy after a brief rain shower, the children did not hesitate to let a little mud and a few tumbles become part of their game, proving resiliency as they navigated the wet ground.
Lara Santos, Premium Brand Business Performance Manager for Homecare Unilever-Breeze, said that Breeze’s “Sige sa Mantsa” motto aims to help kids become resilient. “Dahil ang mantsa, parte ng proseso na matuto. Hindi tayo matututo kung hindi tayo madudumihan,” she said, adding that stains from playing help kids learn about teamwork, sportsmanship, and fortitude.
This was echoed by Josephine Baluyot, a mother of a fourth-grade student who joined Breeze LarOlympics. She said she believes that allowing kids to play outdoors helps them build courage and character, which they will carry with them as they grow older and face tougher challenges in life.
“Sa tingin ko, ang natutunan nila ‘yung nade-develop ‘yung lakas ng loob nila magiging part na rin ng life nila,” she said. “Magiging mindset na rin nila sumubok nang sumubok sa mga gusto nilang gawin nang walang pag-a-alinlangan.”
