Family moves into luxury hotel permanently because it's cheaper than owning a home

Some people only stay at a luxury hotel for a few days while they're on vacation, but a family in China decided to make it their permanent residence as they said it's cheaper than owning a home.

According a report by the South China Morning Post, the unidentified family of eight became a hot topic online for living in a luxury hotel suite in the city of Nanyang in Henan for 229 days now. The room costs 1,000 yuan (P7,848) per day and contains a living room with two twin rooms.

As seen in a video that has been circulating online, the suite has now been filled with the family's daily essentials such as food, water bottles, toiletries, and other supplies.

"Our family of eight lives very well," Mu Xue, a member of the family, said.

She explained that the 1,000 yuan was a long-term rental rate given by the hotel for their all-inclusive stay, which means they no longer have to pay for parking, heating, water, and electricity.

"We feel happy living here, so we plan to live in a hotel for the rest of our lives," Mu explained.

While there's no data available on the cost of living for Nanyang, the news outlet reported that the average rent for an apartment with two rooms in Shanghai reaches 20,000 yuan (P156,967) a month, as per mainland real estate information platform Anjuke.

The family's decision to take residence in a hotel has sparked discussions online, with some questioning whether such a small space would give the eight-member group a comfortable life. Others, meanwhile, said that they would also like to live in luxury in a hotel suite if only they can afford it.
