Coldplay to retire after 12th album, says frontman Chris Martin

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin bared the band's plan for retirement, saying that their 12th album would be their last.

In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music, the band’s vocalist revealed that they are planning to release “12 proper albums” before they officially retire from making music.

“We are only going to do 12 proper albums and that’s real,” Martin told Lowe.

“Less is more,” he said, “and in some of our critics, even less would be even more.”

He went on to explain why they have decided to stop at 12 albums, referencing their biggest influences.

“There’s only seven Harry Potters. There’s only 12 ½ Beatles' albums, there’s about the same for Bob Marley, so all of our heroes,” he told Lowe.

According to Martin, having that limit "means the quality control is so high right now and for a song to make it, it’s almost impossible, which is great. And so, where we could be kind of coasting, we're trying to improve.”

He also stressed that he also wanted to give his bandmates the time to spend their lives on their personal endeavors other than working for the group.

“To make an album great as a band, it’s such a lot of wrangling of people, and I want to give the others some of their life for themselves,” he explained.

Despite their plans to retire, Martin shared that he and his bandmates, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion, will still work on different projects other than touring.

“So if we do something together after that creatively beyond touring, then it will be something different, or it’ll be a side thing, or it’ll be a compilation of things we hadn’t finished,” he said.

The band is set to release their 10th studio album, Moon Music, on Oct. 4, so there are only two albums left before they officially call it quits.

Coldplay last visited the Philippines in January as part of their Music of the Spheres tour. It officially started in March 2022, and will continue until 2025.

Some of their hit songs include Viva La Vida, Fix You, Yellow, The Scientist, and A Sky Full of Stars, among others.
