Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ video game by Square Enix unveiled at E3
Buckle up for a fun space adventure with your favorite cosmic team of misfits.
Marvel Games and Square Enix finally confirmed the rumors that have been swirling around for some time. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, an action-adventure video game based on the legendary team from the Marvel Comics and films, will be released this October.
Developed by Eidos-Montréal and published by Square Enix, this all-new Marvel game set in an original Guardians universe, is currently available for pre-order and will release Oct. 26, 2021 on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
The game was officially revealed during Square Enix's E3 2021 Showcase Sunday (June 13) with the release of a worldwide trailer announcement, gameplay footage and storyline for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.

In the single-player, third-person action-adventure, players will be taking control of Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord as he traverses the galaxy and attempts to lead a team consisting of Rocket, Groot, Gamora and Drax. In the game, Peter will be accompanied by members of the Guardians at all times, with his teammates acting as automatic AI companions.
Star-Lord wields elemental blasters and jet boots (complete with double-jump capabilities), and will be be able to issue commands to his unpredictable team members and access special powers of other characters in the group that can be upgraded as the game progresses.
Here’s the official description for the game:
Fire up Star-Lord’s jet boots for a wild ride across the cosmos in this third-person action-adventure game, a fresh take on Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. With the unpredictable Guardians at your side, blast your way from one explosive situation to another, with original and iconic Marvel characters caught in a struggle for the fate of the universe. You got this. Probably.
As seen in the 10-minute long gameplay first look footage, the narrative-driven adventure includes choice-based moments that will affect the story as you play through it, where you can choose to side with different teammates during arguments.
Despite being a single-player game, it doesn't look like a solitary adventure at all as there's a lot of chat and banter in the dialogue between the characters during exploration and battle.
During battles, time will slow down, giving Star-Lord a moment to pick which attacks his teammates will use on enemies. The teaser footage also shows a sneak peek at the weapons at your disposal, including Rocket's special "mega" attack when he whips out a blaster that's about three times his own size.
Other characters like Mantis and Cosmo will also make an appearance as the team takes down various enemies including Lady Hellbender, the regent of Seknarf Nine.
It looks like the video game is taking inspiration from the James Gunn movies and is making the most of the soundtrack. Turn up the all-star ‘80s mixtape and get ready to kick it during battles.
Star-Lord will always have his trusty tape-recorder on hand and players can access tracks aboard the Milano. The musical element is included when fighting enemies.
The video game will let you rock out to stone cold classics from Star-Lord’s teenage years including Iron Maiden, KISS, New Kids On The Block, Rick Astley and more.
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy will be released on October 26, 2021 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC.
