There will be dancing tonight at the Art Fair
Today, at Art Fair Philippines, all the world’s a stage.
Performance art is under the spotlight for the first time in Art Fair’s return to The Link and Fifth Wall Fest, the country’s premier platform for dance on camera, debuts with a sashay and slay — or shall I say, “Pwesto. Teka… Rampa!”
The art forms of fashion, photography and dance have always been inexplicably linked. In this multimedia exhibit, this connection is examined in a context we may or may have not taken for granted.
My big idea is to reinterpret abstract ideas by manipulating the tangible and giving meaning to form.
“A nod to the dance present in everyday life, guests can anticipate a treat for the senses as we express movement exclusively crafted for the fair. The line between performer and spectator will be blurred,” hints Madge Reyes, Fifth Wall Fest founder and festival director.
The exhibit will be a mix of a physical booth installation and a site-specific performance.
“Pwesto.” is a physical space that will feature works from Koji Arboleda’s “Always On My Mind” and Renzo Navarro’s “Plus Minus.”
“With (“Always On My Mind”) I used the body as a form to show emotion,” says Arboleda in describing his creative process.
“The face is a visual cue of a person’s emotion, but here, there is a limited view of the dancers’ faces,” he says, capturing a multitude of complicated feelings.
“My big idea is to reinterpret abstract ideas by manipulating the tangible and giving meaning to form,” Navarro says of Plus Minus, which takes the five-act structure of a narrative. “I want people to feel differently about a certain idea or look at commonplace objects in another light.”
Featuring dancers dressed in Carl Jan Cruz, the booth will also showcase an installation made in collaboration with the fashion designer.
“Teka…” refers to us spectators, as part of the exhibition.
Then comes “Rampa!” — a site-specific performance by Fifth Wall Fest that integrates dance, fashion, art and everyday life — held tonight, Feb. 17, at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Fifth Wall Fest at Art Fair Philippines is at Booth # INCUB2, 7/F, The Link, Ayala Center, Makati.
Art Fair Philippines tickets are available online at events.pouchnation.com/event/artfairphilippines2023 or at the reception area at The Link from Feb. 17 to 19. Regular tickets are P450 for a Day Pass while concession tickets are P350 for students with valid IDs, senior citizens, and PWDs and P200 for Makati students with valid IDs.
