Weekend Watchlist: 'Alice in Borderland', 'War of the Worlds' & more

Two weeks to go before Christmas. How's everyone doing? Even though we're nearing the merriest time of the year, Netflix's most exciting new releases have little to do with Christmas.

This week, a thrilling new series called Alice in Borderland just dropped on the streaming service. Based on a Japanese manga, the live-action series sees three gamers looking for the ultimate gaming experience, but end up on an adventure through a deadly looking glass.

For those looking to fill the void in their lives now that Start-Up is finished, this J-drama may be the newest Asian binge watch, though it looks like viewers are in for an intense rather than "feel-good" viewing experience based on the trailer alone.

Another potentially interesting new series to watch is War of the Worlds, an Edwardian take on the alien invasion science fiction novel of the same name.

Here's our latest lineup of the latest films and series currently streaming on Netflix that you might want to check out this coming weekend.

Alice in Borderland

Synopsis: An aimless gamer and his two friends find themselves in a parallel Tokyo, where they're forced to compete in a series of sadistic games to survive. The live-action series produced by Netflix is based on the Japanese suspense manga series written and illustrated by Haro Aso, which was also adapted into an original video animation (OVA) in 2014.

War of the Worlds

Synopsis: A couple battling society's expectations to exist in Edwardian-era London must withstand an alien invasion just to stay alive. This three-part British miniseries drama, originally aired on BBC, is an Edwardian period adaptation of the H.G. Wells's 1898 science fiction novel of the same name.

Star Trek: Discovery (Season 3)

Synopsis: Michael Burnham and her companions in the USS Discovery travel into the far reaches of space to meet new lifeforms and discover new planets. The seventh series in the Star Trek franchise, Star Trek: Discovery begins roughly a decade before the events of the original Star Trek series, and follows the crew of the USS Discovery on various adventures. Season 3 episodes drop weekly on Netflix.

The Prom

Synopsis: A group of down-on-their luck Broadway stars shake up a small Indiana town as they rally behind a teen who just wants to attend prom with her girlfriend.

Selena: The Series

Synopsis: Iconic Mexican-American performer Selena rises to fame as she and her family make sacrifices in order to achieve their lifelong dreams.

Archer (Season 11)

Synopsis: Suave, sophisticated spy Archer may have the coolest gadgets, but he still has issues when it comes to dealing with his boss, who is also his mother.

Tears of the Sun

Synopsis: A Navy SEAL is sent to a war-torn African jungle to rescue a doctor, only to realize he must also save the refugees in the physician's care.

Mank

Synopsis: 1930s Hollywood is reevaluated through the eyes of scathing wit and alcoholic screenwriter Herman J. Makiewicz as he races to finish "Citizen Kane." The brand new motion picture from David Fincher shot in monochrome stars Gary Oldman as Mank.

Kalel, 15

Synopsis: Surrounded by tensions and secrets, a teenage boy searches for validation and navigates life with a dysfunctional family following an HIV diagnosis.

Between Maybes

Synopsis: A former actress takes a trip to Japan, where she meets a young man who provides an escape from reality and makes her consider a different way of life.
