'Clueless' sequel series with Alicia Silverstone canceled at Peacock
It looks like we won’t be hearing Cher’s iconic "As if!" again, as the Clueless sequel series is no longer happening.
International outlets Variety and Deadline confirmed that streaming platform Peacock has canceled the project, but no reason was disclosed.
The project was previously reported to be in development in April 2025. Plot details were under wraps, but it was said to be a follow-up to the 1995 film. Alicia Silverstone was set to reprise her iconic role as Cher Horowitz and serve as one of the executive producers of the project.
Citing sources, Variety reported that CBS Studios and Paramount are still very interested in the project and the IP. It is expected to draw a lot of attention in the market once it is presented to potential buyers again, given the film's strong fanbase and creative team.
Peacock also previously developed a separate Clueless project in 2020 centered on Cher’s best friend Dionne (played by Stacey Dash), but it did not progress past the development stage.
Clueless was inspired by Jane Austen’s 1815 novel Emma. It centers on Cher, a wealthy Beverly Hills teen who enjoys matchmaking and makeovers, who later learns about love, friendship, and self-awareness as her own life becomes more complicated.
The 1995 film was starred by Silverstone, Dash, Paul Rudd, Brittany Murphy, and Donald Faison, among others.
It spawned a TV adaptation that premiered in 1996 and ran for three seasons, with Rachel Blanchard taking on the role of Cher.
