99-year-old grandma's dying wish was to have a giant penis erected on her grave

Is there such a thing as a too ridiculous dying wish?

99-year-old Catalina Orduña Pérez's last wish was to have a huge penis built on top of her grave—and she sure got it.

The grandma, known to her friends and family as Doña Cata, passed away on January 20, 2021 and wasn't able to see the monument in all its glory for herself. Her family, however, wanted to honor her dream and unveiled it on July 23. Now erected on her grave is a 5-and-a-half-foot tall, 600-pound phallic statue. Balls and all.

“She wanted to break the paradigm of everything Mexican, where things are sometimes hidden because of not having an open mind,” grandson Álvaro Mota Limón told VICE. "She always said, in the Mexican sense, that we were 'vergas.'"

"Vergas" or "verga" is a Mexican slang that can mean cock in English, and it can also be used as an insult or a compliment.

Doña Cata would often throw that word at her family, meaning to say they could accomplish anything they put their mind to. When you're verga, "one shouldn't give up. When problems arose, you needed to face them head-on."

"She wanted to break the paradigm of everything Mexican, where things are sometimes hidden because of not having an open mind," Mota Limón added.

Aside from a metaphor, the monument is Doña Cata's way of leaving her mark. "She told me that it was her desire so that no one could forget her and that everything we loved about her would be remembered more easily," the grandson said.

Not everyone is happy with the statue, which was worked on for nearly a month by a team of 12 people, but the family had discussed the backlash they would face because of it and said they were prepared for it.
