Broadway hit 'Jesus Christ Superstar' is coming to Manila in 2026
Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's hit musical Jesus Christ Superstar is headed to Manila.
The rock opera will be staged at The Theatre at Solaire from May 2 to 24, 2026 as part of the show's international tour.
Jesus Christ Superstar follows the final days of Jesus Christ, leading up to his crucifixion, as seen through the eyes of Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him for thirty pieces of silver. This story also explores the relationships and struggles of Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, the disciples, and the Roman Empire.
It's entirely told through rock songs, including hits Superstar, I Don't Know How to Love Him, and Gethsemane.
The musical first opened on Broadway in 1971, but before that, it was released as a concept album in 1970.
Apart from staging on Broadway, West End, and other international productions, Jesus Christ Superstar has been adapted into film in 1973, 1999, and 2012. A live concert version was aired on TV, too, in 2018 with John Legend as Jesus and Sara Barreiles as Mary Magdalene.
Recently, an August adaptation by Hollywood Bowl saw Wicked star Cynthia Erivo as Jesus Christ.
The rock opera has been nominated for numerous Tony Awards, but it has yet to bag the coveted trophy. In 2017, it won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival.
"After incredible success in Australia and the UK, we're delighted to be bringing Jesus Christ Superstar to Manila," producer David Ian said.
"This Olivier Award-winning production has amazed audiences around the world with its raw energy and breathtaking performances. Whether you've loved the show for decades or are discovering it for the first time, this will be an unforgettable experience."
The cast for the upcoming Manila run has yet to be announced.
Tickets will first be available for pre-sale from Nov. 3 to 7 through UnionBank and for those who sign up for the GMG Jesus Christ Superstar waitlist.
Public sale will begin on Nov. 8 via Ticketworld.
