'Heneral Luna,' 'Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral' to return to the big screen in celebration of Independence Day
In celebration of this year's Independence Day, select cinemas will screen the award-winning biopics of Filipino heroes Antonio Luna and Gregorio Del Pilar.
Heneral Luna (2015) and Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral (2018) will be available on the big screen on June 12 at Robinsons Galleria Ortigas, Robinsons Manila, Robinsons Antipolo, Shangri-La Red Carpet Cinemas, Fishermall Quezon City, Fishermall Malabon, and Sta. Lucia East Grand Mall.
SM North EDSA, SM Mall of Asia, and SM Fairview, meanwhile, will screen the two movies until June 15.
Ticket prices start at P150.
Heneral Luna, starring John Arcilla, portrays the titular general who led the Philippine Revolutionary Army during the early phases of the Philippine-American War. He was murdered by soldiers under the command of then-president Emilio Aguinaldo during their supposed meeting in Cabanatuan.
Goyo, starring Paulo Avelino, follows the titular young general in the wake of Luna's assassination. He fought and died at the Battle of Tirad Pass.
The two movies are part of the "Bayaniverse," a series of films by TBA Studios based on Philippine history.
The Bayaniverse is having a third entry in Quezon, which portrays Commonwealth president Manuel Quezon and highlights his tumultuous presidential campaign against Aguinaldo.
Starring Jericho Rosales, Quezon is scheduled for theatrical release on Oct. 15.
Bayaniverse producer TBA Studios noted that Quezon is a stand-alone movie, though set within the same cinematic continuity of Heneral Luna and Goyo.
Jerrold Tarog, who directed and co-wrote the first two Bayaniverse movies, is at the helm of Quezon.
The Philippines observes Independence Day on June 12, when the Philippine Revolutionary Government under Aguinaldo declared independence from Spain in 1898 after over 300 years of rule.
