LISTEN: Taylor Swift drops new song ‘Renegade’ with indie folk band Big Red Machine
Another punch to the gut.
In case Swifties have been waiting out the release of Red (Taylor's Version) this November, Taylor Swift and Big Red Machine have unveiled their new song Renegade.
Comprised of Swift’s long-time musical collaborators Justin Vernon (also known as Bon Iver) and The National’s Aaron Dessner, the new song comes from Big Red Machine’s upcoming second album How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last?
The song follows the inner monologue of a person in love with someone suffering from mental health problems, and the battle between staying with them or letting go for your own sake.
“Is it insensitive for me to say "Get your shit together so I can love you? / Is it really your anxiety that stops you from givin' me everything?” Swift queries over the song’s folksy pop ballad.
“While we were making folklore and evermore last year, Taylor and I sometimes talked about experimenting and writing songs together someday for Big Red Machine,” Aaron Dessner shared regarding Renegade’s conception. “Making music with your friends just to make it—that's how Big Red Machine started and has grown—and that’s how Renegade came about too.”
“I, emotionally, was really struck the first time I heard it. Just the way she talks about how anxiety and fear get in the way of loving someone or create an inability for someone to love. I think it's incredibly relatable," he added.
How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last? is set to be released in its entirety on Aug. 27. There will reportedly be two songs featuring Swift, with the second one still kept under wraps.
