Memes and tweets that got us through the Tokyo 2020 Olympics

The flame of the Olympic cauldron has been extinguished, signaling the pandemic-delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics to a close.

This is one Olympics to remember, especially for Filipinos as the country wrapped up the games with its best standing in decades with its four-medal haul, including the first ever gold medal courtesy of champ weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz.

Many are still on a high from watching the Olympics and memories continue to linger—thanks to the funny memes and tweets that peppered social media throughout the 16-day event.

Filipino street skateboarder Margielyn Didal, with her funny quirks and antics, has spawned countless memes that summed up her vibrant spirit and sense of sportsmanship. Fans were ecstatic when Didal posted a photo of herself and skateboarding icon Tony Hawk during the competition. Didal played with the caption, getting in the bandwagon of “people not recognizing Tony Hawk as Tony Hawk” meme.

The post, with the caption, “This guy asked me to take a photo with him and I let him because he looks like Tony Hawk,” even went as far as getting referenced in an interview with Hawk about competing skaters not being able to recognize him like Didal. Hawk had to explain that the caption was a joke.

Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz has also been a subject of a lot of memes—from the winning 127kg. weight she lifted, to the cash rewards and incentives that she will receive for bringing home the elusive Olympic gold.

One of the memes was of Ronnie Henares as his character Tommy in GMA-7 comedy sitcom, Pepito Manaloto. In the meme is a photo Diaz in tears together with the amount of cash rewards she will receive. With it is a photo of Henares, wide-eyed, and captioned “Hidilyn, my friend,” which is a reference to his fraudster character’s famous line, “Pepito, my friend,” which he uses to take advantage of the character of Michael V., who is a millionaire.

Even before the games began, fans online already declared Tonga as the winner of the Olympics as, once again, Tongan flag bearer and athlete Pita Taufatofua graced the opening ceremonies—jacked, immaculately oiled, and topless. Photos and videos of the Tongan “demigod” during the opening ceremonies are still out there for us to ogle.

Athletes have brought the world inside the Olympic Village through their social media. Among the most requested by fans was a video of the athletes testing the cardboard beds that were rumored to be “anti-sex” (they were not). Many of them tried testing the bed by jumping and dancing on them, including members of the Mexican soccer team, whose video went viral on Twitter.

Who can forget British diver and gold medalist Tom Daley knitting in the Olympic stands? He was also photographed knitting while waiting for his turn during his competition. Daley finished a pouch for his gold and bronze medals, and a cardigan replete with a Team GB design.
