'Your Name' creator Makoto Shinkai to release new anime film in 2025
Japanese filmmaker and novelist Makoto Shinkai has announced that he will launch his new anime film.
On X, Makoto, who is known for his anime feature films produced with studio CoMix Wave Films, said in his New Year's message that he has been working on his new movie with his colleagues since last year.
"Happy New Year! 2024 was a year I spent working on a new movie. It's a great joy to build a new world that no one has seen before from scratch with my colleagues," he wrote.
Shinkai also added that he will announce further details about the film "in some way this year."
Nonetheless, reports say that he might explore new genres and cameos as "he was tired of creating boy-meets-girl films."

This year, the live-action adaptation of Shinkai's first anime film, 5 Centimeters Per Second anime, will also be released.
Shinkai, who began his career as a video game animator with Nihon Falcom, rose to prominence as he released his original video animation (OVA) She and Her Cat in 1999.
He then released the science-fiction OVA Voices of a Distant Star in 2002 as his first feature with CoMix Wave. This was followed by his debut feature film, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, in 2004.
Moreover, Shinkai is also the man behind some of the highest-grossing Japanese films, such as Your Name (2016), Weathering with You (2019), and Suzume (2022).
