One of the most powerful characters in the Marvel comics universe will finally make his long-awaited debut in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

As reported by Deadline, British actor Will Poulter (Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, Midsommar) has been cast to play Adam Warlock in the upcoming Marvel Studios movie by writer-director James Gunn.

Deadline noted that Gunn and some Marvel executives conducted a lengthy search to find the right person to play the role, with Poulter and other actors called in to audition for the coveted part. However, Marvel reportedly decided that Poulter's performance "was too good to pass up."

Gunn, known by fans to "strike down false rumors" about his projects, later confirmed the casting news of Poulter by posting a tweet welcoming the actor to his upcoming film.

"Welcome to the Guardians family, Will Poulter," Gunn wrote. "He’s an amazing actor and wonderful guy. See you in a couple weeks."

Adam Warlock was first teased in one of the mid-credit sequences of 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, with Elizabeth Debicki's Ayesha revealing that she created a being named Adam to destroy Star-Lord and the rest of the Guardians following their betrayal.

Created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Roy Thomas, Adam Warlock first appeared as a character only known as Him in 1967's Fantastic Four #66, then officially debuted as the Warlock in 1972's Marvel Premiere #1.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to begin production in November and will premiere in theaters in May 2023.
