A sequel to the hit romantic-comedy film 10 Things I Hate About You is currently in the works.

Gil Junger, who helmed the 1999 film, confirmed that a sequel dubbed 10 Things I Hate About Dating is currently underway.

"10 Things I Hate About Dating is definitively in the works as a feature film. We're developing it right now," he told PEOPLE Magazine.

The follow-up movie will be the first in the trilogy, which will be followed by 10 Things I Hate About Marriage and 10 Things I Hate About Kids.

According to Junger, the sequel will be inspired by Molière's 1666 play The Misanthrope. He is currently co-writing the script with Naya Elle James and is working with the film’s original producer, Andrew Lazar.

More details about the plot and casting have yet to be finalized, but Junger said he’d love to work with Julia Stiles, who played one of the 1999 movie’s main characters named Kat Stratford.

"She shaped the lives of millions of women. That Kat character really spoke to young women in a very powerful way,” Junger told the outlet. He also eyes Larry Miller to return to the upcoming film.

“If it resonates with [the original cast] and I can have some cameos or even real parts, I'd love [that],” he added.

He also added that they will give a nod to the late Heath Ledger, who played Kat's love interest Patrick Verona, in the upcoming sequel. "I think that's a beautiful idea, and the answer is now going to be yes. ... He deserves to be loved."

10 Things I Hate About You follows the life of Kat, a witty, unpopular, and anti-social teen, the complete opposite of her cool younger sister Bianca (Larisa Oleynik). Unfortunately for Bianca, she wasn’t allowed to go on a date until Kat dated someone first. Kat, who does not conform to traditional dating, has her world turned upside-down when she meets the loner bad boy Patrick.

The 1999 film was said to be a modern adaptation of William Shakespeare's 16th-century comedy The Taming of the Shrew
