Brazil couple sets Guinness World record for longest marriage at 84 years and 77 days

A man and a woman in Brazil set a Guinness World record for the longest marriage for a living couple.

According to the Guinness World Records website, Manoel Angelim Dino, 105, and Maria de Sousa Dino, 101, have been together for 84 years and 77 days.

Manoel and Maria first met around 1936 while working in agriculture for their families.

He had traveled to the Almeida region in the Boa Viagem district to collect a shipment of rapaduras, a traditional Brazilian candy, during which he made her acquaintance.

But it was during a chance encounter in 1940 that Manoel would declare his feelings for Maria and ask her out.

They got married in the same year, a time when the first programmable electronic computer wasn't invented yet.

Manoel built a home and worked with Maria side-by-side cultivating rolled tobacco to sell.

They have 13 children together. Their family would grow with 55 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Due to their age, Manoel and Maria have to take things easy.

He spends most of his day resting, though he often joins her in the living room at night to listen to the rosary prayer on the radio at 6 p.m. followed by the televised mass.

Asked for their secret to a long-lasting marriage, Manoel and Maria just gave a short and sweet answer: love.

Before them, the longest marriage ever was that of David Jacob Hiller (b. 1789, d. 1899) and Sarah Davy Hiller (b. 1792, d. 1898), who were married for 88 years and 349 days until her passing.
