Dwayne Johnson's live-action Maui revealed in latest 'Moana' trailer
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Maui has been revealed in the second trailer for Disney's live-action Moana movie.
Released on Mar. 23, the trailer showed Moana walking by the beach with her Grandma Tala while enjoying the company of her people and her pet boar Pua. Moana's father, Chief Tui, played by John Tui, was also seen sharing a moment with her daughter.
In the next scenes, Moana can be seen talking with Grandma Tala as she realizes that the legends told to her were true.
"Beyond our reef, an evil darkness has found us," narrated Grandma Tala before instructing her granddaughter about he next mission.
"Moana, the ocean has chosen you. Find Maui. Restore the heart of Te Fiti and save us all," she continued.
The scene then slowly shifted to show a bulky character singlehandedly lifting a boat, "Maui, demigod of the wind and sea," exclaimed Moana.
"Hero of men," corrected Johnson's Maui to a startled Moana. "So it goes like this. Maui, shapeshifter, demigod of the wind and sea, hero of men."
"Ah! Women, women too! Men and women," he corrected himself before responding with his iconic "You're welcome" to Moana's show of gratitude.
The next scenes then show the adventures the two shared as they explored the ocean to complete their mission to save the people of Motunui. The trailer also gave a preview of Maui's new shark form.
Social media users were quick to react to Johnson's live-action Maui, a character he also lent his voice to in the original 2016 animated movie.
"What else can I say except, “Why did we need this?” a YouTuber said.
"A character that actually matches their description?!" said a commenter on Facebook.
Some criticized the use of CGI and took notice of Johnson's fake hair.
"That wig they put on The Rock is killing me," said one.
"The Rock looking more like Scorpion King then Maui," said another, referencing his earlier work in The Mummy franchise.
In 2023, Johnson first announced that the live-action movie was in the works.
In 2024, the whole cast was revealed with Catherine Laga'aia leading as live-action Moana and Johnson reprising his role.
In November 2025, the first live-action Moana trailer dropped, showing a first look at Laga'aia's Moana and a preview of the live-action scenery.
