Fernando Zóbel's Tarraco

Fernando Zóbel's Tarraco.

Zobel's 1960 Tarraco piece was among the pieces in his final exhibit in the Philippines before he settled down in Spain. Per the write-up, the Spanish-Filipino painter took inspiration from the city of Tarraco, the earliest Roman settlement on the Iberian Peninsula, which was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 for its outstanding example of Roman urban design.

It's among his paintings that were named and placed in Spain. The specific artwork alluded to how he longed for the European country while grappling with an identity crisis—torn between his inherited business life and his passion for painting—spiraling into depression under corporate duties, teaching at the Ateneo, and having little time to paint.

It's one of his works that featured the Ifugao and their courtship rituals.
