It’s SuperManila Comic Con weekend! Here’s what to expect

By Jerald Uy Published Sep 06, 2024 9:12 pm Updated Sep 06, 2024 11:10 pm

Top pop culture stores Filbar’s and Comic Odyssey have teamed up for Super Manila Comic Con, an event more focused on the comics medium, rather than flippantly bearing the term “comic” in its name, which tends to be overshadowed by celebrities. Expect art and creativity to flood the two-day event, happening this weekend, Sept. 7-8 at The Space, located on the fifth floor of One Ayala in Makati City.

Get your shot to work for Marvel Comics

Marvel Comics editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski is in town again to review portfolios from aspiring pencillers, inkers, and cover artists. Among the Filipino artists he has recruited in the past were Marvel Rivals video game character designer Kim Jacinto and gouache/watercolor artist Rian Gonzales. Recently, his team brought rising comics artist Roi Mercado to Paris for Marvel's Art Atelier workshop with veteran artists and there might be a major announcement for Mercado’s new project at SuperManila Comic Con. Plus, most of the Pinoy Marvel star artists will be there such as Leinil Yu (Secret Invasion, Wave co-creator) and Carlo Pagulayan (Planet Hulk). Make sure to attend his “Hall C.B.” panel at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Grab Peach Momoko’s limited-edition Wave print

Eisner Award-winning Japanese artist Peach Momoko is in the Philippines for the first time and she has a treat for Pinoy Marvel fans, especially those of the Cebuana superheroine Wave! She’s bringing 125 pieces of her Wave prints on Saturday and another 125 on Sunday for only P1,000 each. Momoko is also the writer-artist of the Ultimate X-Men reboot comics so make sure to attend her “Into the Momokoverse” panel on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

Meet industry legends Bob Layton and Mike Zeck

Before we watch Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027, let’s meet the artists behind the source material, the 1984 crossover series Secret Wars, in the flesh! Bob Layton and Mike Zeck will appear in a panel at SuperManila on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Individually, they are powerhouse artists - Layton being the penciller for Iron Man's Armor Wars set to be adapted into a film and Zeck, the creator of Spider-Man’s black costume, which later became the symbiote known as Venom.

Snag the jeepney variant cover of Transformers

Commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Transformers, SuperManila Comic Con is making its limited edition jeepney variant available for P800 per copy. With art duties by Von Randal, Ellery Santos, and Rex Espino, the event-exclusive cover shows Hound, an Autobot who morphs into a classic U.S. military jeep – transforming into the iconic Philippine jeepney. Contrary to rumors, it’s not called Phaseout!

Join the Venomous segment

Fans have a love-hate relationship with the Sony Spider-Man Universe but who doesn't have their own poison, or should I say, venom? We can all agree our favorite battlecry is “It’s Morbin’ Time,” right? Right? Well, if you want more gooey stuff from this pocket universe where Spidey’s sinister villains become anti-heroes, make sure to attend the 30-minute segment “Venomous” hosted by Columbia Pictures Philippines on Saturday. Get a chance to win special edition movie t-shirts ahead of the much-anticipated release of Venom: The Last Dance.

Watch the first 10 minutes of DAN DA DAN

Manga and anime fans should not miss this sneak peek of DAN DA DAN on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Presented by Muse Asia, the segment will play the first 10 minutes of the action-packed animated series revolving around a ghost-believing girl and an alien-believing boy learning the truths about ghosts and aliens.

SuperManila Comic Con 2024 is indeed poised to deliver a geekgasmic event to different fandoms! General daily admission tickets cost P500 while kids 30 inches and under get free admission. Students will also receive a P100 discount on general admission tickets purchased at the event.
