Shopping alert! Here are some cool finds at the Philippine Book Festival 2025

The Philippine Book Festival (PBF) 2025 has arrived, and it's an event you cannot afford to miss.

For four days only, Megatrade Hall at the SM Megamall transforms into a literary paradise, offering exclusive access to author meet-and-greets, art workshops, talks, and exhibits centered around Filipino books.

Visitors can also experience immersive spaces, such as Pakyawan Plaza, which houses a Pahiyas Festival-inspired bahay kubo and a live mural.

"This year, we're not just focusing on numbers. We're also ensuring that the kinds of books that are reaching these students actually match their needs and mirror their contexts," NBDB Executive Director Charisse Aquino-Tugade said in a statement. 

From Ricky Lee's collections to books written by children, here are some cool finds you can score at the PBF 2025, which runs until March 16.

The PBF 2025 is a unique opportunity to delve into the literary minds of one of the country's most iconic writers: Ricky Lee. Known for his groundbreaking work as a screenwriter and author, Lee has crafted a legacy that spans the film and literary worlds.

At this year's PBF, attendees will have the exclusive opportunity to explore and purchase a curated collection of Lee's works, which showcase his depth as a storyteller. Here you can score his renowned pieces such as Si Amapola sa 65 na Kabanata (P315), Trip to Quiapo, which is a scriptwriting Manual (P315), Para Kay B (P337), Scriptwriting Workbook (P270), Kalahating Bahaghari (P360), and Kabilang sa mga Nawawala (225), to name a few. 

The stall also showcases tote bags, t-shirts, postcards, and stickers inspired by the national artists' works.

Chikiting Books

This year, a special corner is dedicated to young readers, families, and anyone who loves delightful, engaging, and educational children's books.

Chikiting Books, under Vibal Publishing, offers a wide range of children's books for children and children at heart. It "spins together words and vivid illustrations to bring the very best in storytelling to life, helping children address real-life questions, concerns, and values in a form with which they can easily identify."

Comics by Tarantadong Kalbo

For comic book enthusiasts, both new and old, the PBF 2025 also offers an exciting opportunity to explore the dynamic, irreverent world of Kevin Raymundo, fondly known as "Tarantadong Kalbo."

Known for his unique brand of humor, social commentary, and fearless exploration of Filipino life, Tarantadong Kalbo's comics have earned a dedicated following, and this year's festival will celebrate his work like never before.

Speaking to PhilSTAR L!fe, Raymundo amplified the importance of reading comics in physical copy despite the digital era. 

"Nakakatulong kasi ang komiks to entice or encourage young readers na magbasa ng mas maraming libro, kasi aside from the text, mayroon siyang visual elements, eh yung mga kids especially mas excited sila kapag mayroong picture," he said.

At the festival, comic lovers can explore and purchase Tarantadong Kalbo's latest comics and fan favorites that have entertained and challenged readers for years.

These include his Books 1 and 2 (P600), Book 3 and Baby TK (P650), and Nosebleed (P800). The stall also sells stickers for only P40. 

Comics by Pol Medina

Price range: P300 - P500

Those who grew up reading Pinoy comic strips know Pol Medina Jr. For over three decades, his creation, Pugad Baboy, has been a beloved fixture in Filipino homes.

At the PBF 2025, his collection of iconic comics will be on full display, offering festival-goers a unique opportunity to explore, enjoy, and purchase some of the most beloved works in Philippine comic history.

The renowned Filipino cartoonist also told L!fe the value of reading comics.

"Kumbaga kasi gateway drug siya sa hard reading. Karamihan sa mga bata natuto sa pagbasa gamit ang komiks kasi may visuals eh, hindi kagaya sa ibang books na straight to text. Kumbaga, nape-please na yung mata mo, nakikiliti pa 'yung utak mo," he underscored.

One of the event's most heartwarming and inspiring sections will be the spotlight on books written by young authors aged 9 to 16.

Book Writers Club, penned by young minds, offers fresh perspectives, daring creativity, and a unique look at the world through the eyes of children and teens. 

From adventurous tales to thought-provoking reflections on life and identity, the books by these young authors cover a diverse range of genres and themes that are sure to captivate readers of all ages.

Among the young writers who are present on the first day of the festival are Chayyliell Antazo, who wrote The Tale of Morning People (P499), Pio Calungcaguin, who wrote Home Schooled in the Kitchen (P449) and Yimty in My Tummy (P349) and X.G Antazo, who wrote the Rey Collins Series (P499).

8Letters Bookstore and Publishing

One of the most exciting features this year is the Pinoy Sci-Fi collection by 8Letters Bookstore and Publishing. The publishing house supports Filipino authors and promotes creative works that reflect our cultural identity and futuristic imaginations.
