Gear up your hearts and dust off your spades, Alice in Borderland fans. The globally popular Japanese sci-fi thriller is returning for a third season of deadly games on Netflix.
The streaming giant broke the news on social media today, Sept. 28, with a cryptic message and a clip of the joker card.
"Your guesses were correct: Alice in Borderland is officially coming back for Season 3! Keep an eye out for the Joker, because a new game is about to begin " Netflix captioned the post.
The survival show's two lead stars, Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya, are set to reprise their roles as the video game-obsessed Ryohei Arisu and mountain climber Yuzuha Usagi respectively. Shinsuke Sato is once again taking the helm as the show's director.
Alice in Borderland is based on the manga series by Haro Aso, which follows the story of Arisu who finds himself in a strange, emptied-out version of Tokyo also known as Borderland. Here, Arisu must survive by winning deadly games represented by the four suits of playing cards: the club, diamond, heart, and spade.
The hit Japanese drama instantly became Netflix's most-watched series during its debut on Dec. 10, 2020, with Netflix renewing the show for a second season only two weeks after its release. The second season was aired on Dec. 22, 2022, and likewise skyrocketed to Netflix's Top 10 in over 90 countries with a total of 200 million viewing hours worldwide.
While Netflix has kept the upcoming show's plot under wraps, the cliffhanger in season 2's finale shared a glimpse of the thrill fans can look forward to in its third season. It can be recalled that at that time, Arisu, Usagi, and other game survivors found themselves in a hospital reminiscent of the real world. However, the reveal of the joker card before the closing credits hinted that the group might not be where they think they are.
In addition to the plot, Netflix has yet to announce Alice in Borderland season 3's release date so stay tuned.
