Zack Snyder sets new sci-fi film with Netflix

Justice League director Zack Snyder is turning to streaming giant Netflix for his sci-fi film, Rebel Moon.

This isn’t the first time Snyder had an exclusive film with Netflix. Recently, his latest movie Army of the Dead was a streaming hit. According to Netflix, there were approximately 72 million people viewing the film in its first four weeks, landing it in the streaming site’s top 10 most watched movies.

Instead of a zombie heist film, Rebel Moon’s story is set in outer space where a peaceful colony is suddenly threatened by a tyrant named Regent. In desperation, its citizens dispatch a mysterious woman to seek out warriors from different planets in hopes to fight back.

Other than directing Rebel Moon, Snyder is also set to produce the film with his wife, Deborah Snyder, and to co-write the intergalactic film that is inspired by Star Wars and Akira Kurosawa’s films, with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad whom he has also worked with in Army of the Dead

“It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in an exclusive interview.

Before becoming its own thing, Rebel Moon was actually a Star Wars pitch Zack Snyder had developed years ago, even before the Walt Disney Company acquired LucasFilm. However, it never passed mere conversation and was deliberately scrapped, until now.

“I’ve spent the last two or three years building out this universe. Every corner has to be painted in. I’ve been doing designs, constantly drawing and really cultivating its fertile ground to make this world fully realized,” he adds.

Snyder also plans to begin production in early 2022.
