Duolingo announces owl mascot Duo is dead
Goodbye, Duo the Owl.
Duolingo announced that they're bidding farewell to Duo, formally known as The Duolingo Owl.
In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Feb. 12, the language learning app said that their beloved owl mascot is dead.
"Authorities are currently investigating his cause of death and we are cooperating fully. Tbh, he probably died waiting for you to do your lesson, but what do we know," it quipped.
"We're aware he had many enemies, but we kindly ask that you refrain from sharing why you hate him in the comments," Duolingo added.
The app also mentioned Duo's favorite, Dua Lipa, in its statement. "We appreciate you respecting Dua Lipa's privacy at this time," it joked.
In another post, Duolingo shared a video about the death of its owl mascot. "In lieu of flowers, please do a Duolingo lesson," it wrote.
Since Duo's death, Duolingo has a photo of the owl with X eyes on their profile pictures on their social media pages as part of its brand marketing campaign.
Duolingo is a free mobile app that lets its users learn over 30 languages "with bite-size lessons based on science." It was founded by Luis von Ahn and Severin Hacker in 2011.
