Unfolding the future: Samsung unpacks its newest Galaxy foldable phones

Foldables are in vogue at Samsung's recent Unpacked 2021 event.

Instead of releasing a new Galaxy Note device, the tech giant introduced two new foldable devices to its Galaxy Z series lineup: the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3. In addition to the futuristic phones, the Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Buds2 were unveiled.

How do these two foldable models differ from each other? The Fold opens like a book and is sized like a tablet, while the Flip opens like a compact mirror and is reminiscent of (well) flip phones like the old Motorola Razr.

Samsung has worked on making these premium devices more reliable as daily drivers (which the first Fold failed at with all its hinge issues). Now, the Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 boast IPX8 water resistance making them more durable against the rain. They're also protected with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus so they're not vulnerable to scratches and accidental drops.

The tablet-like Fold3 sports two screens in total—the 7.6-inch folding display and a 6.2-inch cover screen, both of which have 120Hz refresh rates for a buttery-smooth viewing experience. In addition, the bigger screen features an Under Display Camera, which means you'll be getting a full, uninterrupted picture on the 7.6-inch display.

Samsung might have ditched its Galaxy Note series, but it's bringing back one of the line's unique features. The Fold3 now has support for the S Pen, allowing users to quickly jot down notes or draw on its big screen.

Meanwhile, the Flip3 is recapturing the fun vibes of flip phones. This foldable comes in fashionable colors of Cream, Green, Lavender, and Phantom Black. Its cover display is also now larger to make glancing at notifications easier.

K-pop superstars BTS even starred in the ad for the Flip3 dancing to Butter with the foldable. Suga also released his own rendition of Samsung's Over the Horizon ringtone.

Samsung is really pushing for its foldables to be mainstream. Their launch prices are cheaper than previous iterations with the Galaxy Z Flip3 starting at P52,990 and the Fold3 starting at P87,990.

The new Galaxy Z series will be available on samsung.com/ph starting September 22.

Any plans to get a foldable phone anytime soon?
