How basic are you? This site tells if your music taste is niche or mainstream
Think you've got a particularly unique music taste? This website could tell you if you're niche or basic with a capital B.
Made by digital music entertainment space Koodos, the Mainstream Meter is a Spotify add-on that evaluates your listening habits and most-played songs to figure out just how popular (or unpopular) you are to the rest of the audiophiles of the world.
To get started simply go to the Mainstream Meter website, and connect the website to your Spotify account. Don't worry, you can take back the access later, much like with other add-ons connected to Spotify and Facebook.
From there, the site will tell you your top artists, along with your Niche to Mainstream percentage. For this certified Swiftie and pop music enthusiast, it was really no surprise that I would score higher than a 50, as my other top artists were the likes of Ariana Grande, The 1975, and Doja Cat.
Other members of the PhilSTAR L!fe team expected higher results because of their preferred genres to listen to. I pointed out that Doris Day isn't an all that popular artist, although she could have higher streams for a different age group.
Meanwhile, other people have since been sharing their results via Instagram Stories or Twitter—either proudly boasting their low score (AKA underrated) music or accepting their fate as old-fashioned mainstream lovers.
oppz looks like i have to stream weki meki, h1-key, pink fantasy, berrygood to the max so i can lower my mainstream meter then i can keep my image of being mysterious and unique and quirky and different pic.twitter.com/gwvzibXe0o
