Netflix has released a short but massively sweet behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming dark fantasy series The Sandman based on the DC comic book series by Neil Gaiman.

The Sandman is a rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven. The story follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the cosmic and human mistakes he's made during his vast existence.

Released during Netflix’s first-ever Geeked Week celebration, Gaiman narrated the behind-the-scenes video that gives fans a sneak peek of what to expect from the epic series.

“Sandman is the story of the place that we go when we close our eyes at night, and it’s caled the Dreaming, and the Dreaming is ruled by Morpheus” explained Gaiman.

The two-minute long video, which showed footage from the set being built interspersed with pages from the comic books and production shots and scenes inspired directly from the comics, also featured brief interviews with key cast members.

“I’m someone who is an obsessive ‘Sandman’ fan,” said Tom Sturridge, who has been cast in the titular role of Morpheus. “It’s an awesome responsibility because it’s something that is so beloved.”

Gwendoline Christie, best known for her role as Brienne in Game of Thrones, stars as a gender-swapped version of fallen angel Lucifer Morningstar.

“I read the Sandman graphic novels, so I knew that I simply had to be involved in this project because something truly unique was going to happen,” said Christie. “The sets are vast, great amount of detail and care has been put into how it’s been brought to life.”

Aside from Sturridge and Christie, the show features a diverse cast including Charles Dance, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Stephen Fry, and Patton Oswalt, and more.

According to the author, Shepperton Studios in England, where Netflix set up a permanent production base in 2019, is literally bringing dreams to life with the production.

Gaiman had high praises for the crew currently working on bringing his Sandman universe from the comics to life, describing them, the art department, set decorators and production designers as “wizards” and “absolute magicians.”

“What they’ve conjured here, it’s like walking around inside your own dream,” said Gaiman.

Produced by Warner Bros. Television, The Sandman is executive produced by co-writers Gaiman, David S. Goyer and showrunner Allan Heinberg.

“This is Sandman being made for people who love Sandman by people who love Sandman, and I can not wait until people see this,” stressed Gaiman.
