The first trailer for the upcoming film was released on April 29 and it's set to tell the story of the titular character's origins and his childhood with his brother Taka, a.k.a. Scar.

The Cowboy Carter singer will be reprising her role as Nala while Donald Glover will return as Simba. The two characters will be king and queen in the upcoming movie and will have a daughter named Kiara to be voiced by 12-year-old Blue Ivy.

Kiara first appeared in the 1998 film The Lion King II: Simba's Pride and in the 2016 TV series The Lion Guard.

Also part of the cast are Aaron Pierre as young Mufasa, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as young Scar, John Kani as Rafiki, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, Thandiwe Newton as Taka's mother Eshe, Anika Noni Rose as Mufasa's mother Afia, Keith David as Mufasa's father Masego, Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros, and Tiffany Boone as Sarabi.

Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda joins the film to pen and produce music for the film along with Hans Zimmer, Pharrell, and Nicholas Britell.

Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) is helming the film with Jeff Nathanson as writer.

The first Lion King came out in 1994, with the live-action remake coming out in 2019.
