To mark the 20th anniversary of the film franchise, a mobile game based on the Legally Blonde film and the Red, White, and Blonde sequel is set to debut later this year.

The free-to-play mobile game comes from Melbourne-based studio PlaySide, a studio which has previously turned television and movie franchises into mobile games, including Cars: Lightning League, Jumanji: Epic Run, and The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners.

No concept art or official gameplay is available yet for the upcoming Legally Blonde game, but initial reports say it will have puzzle and match-3 elements (similar to Candy Crush and Jewel Quest), as well as a choice-based narrative story that ties it to the films.

The original Legally Blonde film debuted in 2001 and told the story of sorority sister turned Harvard Law student, Elle Woods, who defied tired stereotypes about girly women who are into fashion.

The 2003 sequel Legally Blonde: Red, White and Blonde pitted Elle against an evil make-up manufacturer that tests its product on animals.

A third film is also in the works with Legally Blonde 3 slated for a 2022 release. Reese Witherspoon will be reprising her role as Elle Woods while Mindy Kaling (The Office) and Dan Goor (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) have signed on to co-write the script for the sequel.

As reported by License Global, the game studio PlaySide is a part of a multi-year deal with MGM Studio, which is reportedly building out a licensing line around the movie’s key themes including  “empowerment, education, humor and pink fashion.”

“We have a good relationship with MGM and we loved the franchise,” PlaySide's vice president of development TJ Munusamy said. “It’s about women’s empowerment. She’s smart, savvy, and has a sophisticated side. It’s one of those films that’s a classic.”

Robert Marick, Executive Vice President, MGM Global Consumer Products & Experiences, added "Legally Blonde is one of those iconic and inspirational brands that continues to appeal to new generations of fans around the world. We are thrilled to partner with PlaySide Studios to bring these trailblazing films to mobile devices, and offer consumers a new way to interact with one of our most cherished characters, Elle Woods."

The Legally Blonde game will be available on Android and iOS and released in 2021.
