Time to let go: What people are selling on Carousell after a breakup

Published Feb 05, 2025 4:17 pm

We've all seen it: after a breakup, one person boxes up their ex's belongings, ready to either burn them or return them. But some people take a different approach, choosing to make some money by selling those items online. Where to find them? Carousell.

In 2024, the online marketplace has become a place for users to sell everything from romantic gifts to small items from their previous relationships.

According to a press release, beauty products—including perfumes—topped the list, followed by luxury goods, women's fashion, especially dresses, computers and tech, and sneakers. This was based on listings with the keywords "my ex" in the description and via manual analysis.

"Telling of the kind of gifts couples exchange—no surprises that fashion items and luxury goods are the most common items decluttered," Carousell said.

In the report, Carousell featured some ex-lover stories. For instance, a user is selling a mattress at half its price after finding out that her ex cheated while she was attending "The Eras Tour."

"One month lang nagamit. Left the apartment where we used to live together with all of the things I bought when I learned my ex cheated on me while I attended the Eras Tour."

In another cheating incident, a user is selling an SEC 45L Deluxe Alloy Box, which was supposed to be her Christmas gift to her now ex-boyfriend.

Another is selling hike shoes as the seller needs "help moving on from an ex."

"Used once. I am not an outdoorsy person which is one of my ex's and mine's differences. I was looking forward to the next hike since restrictions have been lifted, but I guess that's not possible anymore."

Been dreaming of your own Louis Vuitton bag? A seller is decluttering her Speedy Bandolière 35 for P70,000.

"I bought this in Marina Bay Sands in Singapore with my ex... Gift niya kasi nanalo siya sa casino... Hindi po siya nagamit halos at malaki and madami ko halos bag,"  she wrote.

"Very legit, legit pa sa ex ko," she assured.

A seller also posted an item her ex-boyfriend left her place.

"My ex left this January last year. Too big for me. Wanna remove all of the things left at my place so, please help a Sissie out," she wrote.

Interestingly, January saw the highest number of online listings with the keywords "my ex" in the past three years.

This was followed by August, November, July, December, October, February, March, June, September, May, and April.

Carousell is one of the classifieds and e-commerce platforms across Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Philippines, and Indonesia. The app, available for iOS and Android users, features a wide range of items you can buy and sell. These include fashion, luxury goods, mobile phones, books, toys, cars, motorcycles, and home services (like renovation, cleaning, and moving), to name a few.
