'Doraemon' director Tsutomo Shibayama dies at 84
Longtime Doraemon director Tsutomo Shibayama has died. He was 84.
Animation studio Ajia-do announced Shibayama's passing on its website.
"Our former President and CEO, Tsutomu Shibayama, passed away on March 6, 2026, due to lung cancer," their statement read.
"All of us at the company express our heartfelt gratitude for the kindness and warm support you extended to us during your lifetime," it added.
Shibayama was the chief director of the Doraemon anime series for 20 years. He was also behind other anime offerings like Nintama Rantaro, Chibi Maruko-chan, and Majime ni Fumajime Kaiketsu Zorori, where he served as director and general director.
A private funeral was held in honor of Shibayama with his close friends and family in attendance, according to Ajia-do.
A memorial service will take place at a later date.
"We respectfully decline any floral tributes, monetary gifts, or visits of condolence," the studio's statement read.
