Bethesda Game Studios finally revealed the first official gameplay trailer for the upcoming next-generation sci-fi RPG, Starfield.

At the Xbox Games Showcase on Monday, the studio provided a closer look at Starfield’s space exploration and combat mechanics as well as the wide array of customization in the upcoming game.

Set in 2330, Starfield introduces players with a new frontier to explore. In the game, players will join Constellation, the last group of space explorers who are seeking rare artifacts to answer humanity’s greatest question: “what is out there?”

The lengthy trailer showed off how vast Starfield’s Settled Systems is, starting off with the exploration of Anselon’s moon called Kreet, where players will eventually encounter strange local wildlife and some pirates from Crimson Fleet.

“It’s not just this planet, it’s all the planets in the system… and not just this system, but over a hundred systems, over 1,000 planets, all open for you to visit.” Game Director Todd Howard said.

The first gameplay footage also showcased the variety of choices in customizing your character. For example, players can pick a background that gives them three starting skills as well as optional traits that come with unique advantages and disadvantages.

“It’s our most flexible yet. You can customize all elements of how you look,” he said.

Additionally, Starfield has combined the “best” skill system from the previous titles, allowing players to unlock new skills which they can rank up throughout the game.

The trailer also showed off Starfield’s deep crafting systems, from running research projects with resources you find from different planets to crafting weapon mods that players would need in order to survive.

In addition to this, players can even build their own outposts as they visit planets in Starfield. These can either act as a home away from home for their survival or serve as a resource generation for future explorations.

“You can choose where and how to build each one and you can hire characters you meet to keep it up and running,” he said.

Aside from this, Howard also confirmed that players would be able to fly spaceships in Starfield, adding that aside from customizing the ships’ looks, players can also tweak their performance, from engines to shields to weapons systems.

“It’s been an incredible journey for us making it, but we know that’s only the beginning, for it’s when all of you play it that the journey begins,” Howard said.

Starfield arrives exclusively on Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2023.
