Barbie celebrates 65th anniversary with nostalgic ‘Incredibly Glamorous’ doll
Barbie is turning 65!
A day after International Women's Day, the doll that shaped most girls' childhood is celebrating its birthday on March 9. In honor of the anniversary, Mattel is releasing a new doll that gives a nod to its 1959 original version.
Clothed in a floor-length black and white ball gown, the “Incredibly Glamorous” Barbie goes back to her roots as she sports the same style as the 1959 swimsuit version of the doll.
Complete with cat-eye sunglasses and a half-up half-down hairdo, Barbie screams retro.
“We've modernized her for today, but touched on all her glamour and gave great little cues and nods for collectors — little Easter eggs in there — that they will understand,” Kim Culmone, the Senior Vice President and Head of Design For Dolls, told People.
Mattel will also roll out eight Barbie Roll Models dolls inspired by actresses Dame Helen Mirren and Viola Davis, model Nicole Fujita, singers Shania Twain and Kylie Minogue, indigenous content creator Maira Gomez, German comedian Enissa Amani, and Mexican filmmaker Lila Avilés, women who are deemed to be storytellers using their platforms for good.
“This month, [Barbie] will be sharing countless stories of empowerment and bringing her legendary legacy to life through the eyes and words of fans everywhere, starting with some of the most renowned storytellers out there,” Mattel wrote in its Instagram post.
A collection of nostalgia-inducing products highlighting the most popular career Barbies and other celebratory and fashionista dolls will also be introduced in light of the anniversary.
