'Hogwarts Legacy' takes Potterheads back to the 1800s
The global pandemic may have forced many schools to shut their doors, but that’s definitely not the case at the famed Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Alongside the price and release date revelations at yesterday’s Sony’s PlayStation 5 live stream event, Warner Bros.’ Portkey Games has unveiled Hogwarts Legacy, an open-world RPG game set in the universe of Harry Potter.
The reveal trailer opens with a carriage arriving at Hogwarts, with the opening narration beginning with: “Magic, both beautiful and powerful, binds together our long history. That common bond we share is the legacy of Hogwarts. Now is the time to add your own story to these hallowed walls and quite possibly, shape the future of the wizarding world.”
Set in the 1800s, long before the events of the Harry Potter books and film franchise, the game will require players to take on the role of a young witch or wizard and experience life as a student at Hogwarts.
Players will create their own character, who may have the ability to control ancient magic, and must “grow their magical abilities by mastering spells, brewing potions, and taming fantastic beasts.” They will embark on an epic journey to uncover hidden truths, avoid lurking dangers and prevent the world from falling into darkness.
As an open-world RPG, there are various missions and players must make tough choices as they make their way around the campus and later, into the greater wizarding world.
Aside from the presence of mythical creatures, angry trolls and fire-breathing dragons, other familiar locations like the Forbidden Forest and Hogsmeade Village can also be explored.
Developed by Avalanche software, Hogwarts Legacy is set to launch in 2021 and will be available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
