LOOK: LEGO introduces SMART Brick that can bring creations to life

Published Jan 06, 2026 6:34 pm

LEGO unveiled a new way to play with its iconic bricks.

At the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Jan. 5, the toy maker introduced its "SMART Play" system, an innovative platform that can make creations interactive.

The system features three elements: the LEGO SMART Brick, SMART Tags, and SMART Minifigures.

The SMART Brick, the first of the trio, is a classic 2x4 brick that contains a custom ASIC chip smaller than LEGO stud that enables responsive physical play. This way, if you built an X-Wing fighter from Star Wars, for instance, it will make engine revving and laser sounds depending on how you move, tilt, and make other gestures. It also lights up for a more immersive experience.

The company also developed a Bluetooth-based BrickNet feature, which allows for multiple SMART Bricks to recognize and interact with each other.

Meanwhile, the SMART Tags, studless 2x2 tiles, pair with the SMART Brick to tell it how it should play—like if it's a helicopter, a toilet, or a spaceship.

Lastly, the SMART Minifigure reacts to the SMART Brick. The Star Wars set features figurines of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Emperor Palpatine, and Darth Vader, and they'll have different moods and behave differently toward various creations and movements.

LEGO is releasing a new Star Wars set to showcase its latest SMART Play system.

"We found that giving kids this starting point was a more effective way for them to get used to the SMART Play platform than a blank canvas," the company said in an article on its website, adding that children know how to play with ships.

There's no news yet about when the new toy is available in the Philippines, but it's currently up for pre-order in the US.

There are three sets available: Darth Vader's TIE Fighter, Luke's Red Five X-wing, and the Throne Room Duel and A-wing. It starts at $69.99 (P4,000).

CES 2026, a showcase of the latest tech releases and concepts, is currently happening in Las Vegas until Jan. 9.
