'Grey's Anatomy' is getting a spinoff
ABC Network has approved a new Grey’s Anatomy spinoff set for a late 2026 release.
The upcoming series, which will be produced by 20th Television and Shondaland, is described as “an edgy drama about a team at a West Texas rural medical center—the last chance for care before miles of nowhere," according to an official logline shared by entertainment outlet Variety.
The spinoff will be headed by Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes as co-creator and executive producer alongside 2024 series showrunner Meg Marinis and Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey in the original medical drama and also serves as its executive producer.
"I am incredibly excited to expand the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ universe," Marinis said in a statement. "This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion, and connection audiences have loved from ‘Grey’s’ for more than two decades—all set in my home state of Texas."
"I am so grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating this dynamic world and feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it," she added.
Other details, including the spinoff's connection to Grey’s Anatomy and the appearance of the original characters, have yet to be revealed.
The new series will be the fourth spinoff of the 22-season-long Grey’s Anatomy, which is known as the longest-running scripted prime time television series in the US. Other spinoffs to show include Private Practice (2007), Station 19 (2018), and Grey’s Anatomy: B-Team (2018).
