Sugar, spice and everything nice...
Meet the cast of the live-action ‘Powerpuff Girls’ series
It's been more than 20 years since The Powerpuff Girls first used their awesome powers to save the world and it looks like they've officially come to life!
The actresses playing Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup in the live-action adaptation of the beloved Cartoon Network series have been revealed.
Chole Bennet (Agents of SHIELD), Dove Cameron (Disney’s Descendants) and Yanna Perrault (Broadway’s Jagged Little Pill) have signed on as older versions of the pint-sized crime-fighting trio in the Powerpuffs reboot.
The adult-themed remake series of The Powerpuff Girls was first announced as being in development back in August last year for The CW Television Network.
The show is based on the animated kid’s series created by Craig McCracken, which originally aired from 1998 to 2005 on the Cartoon Network. The cartoon revolved around three kindergarten-aged girls with superpowers created by Professor Utonium using a mixture of sugar, spice, and everything nice with the mysterious Chemical X.
As reported by Variety, the upcoming CW series imagines the girls now as disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting. However, unforeseen circumstances will eventually force them to reunite once more.
Chole Bennet has been cast as Blossom, the leader of the group. Described as a "spunky, conscientious, Little-Miss-Perfect child who holds several advanced degrees," this Blossom has repressed kiddie-superhero trauma that has left her feeling anxious and reclusive, and she aims to become a leader again, on her own terms.
Bennet is best known for her role in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, where she starred as Daisy “Skye” Johnson, a.k.a Quake, throughout the show’s seven-season run. Her other notable roles include the ABC music drama Nashville and the animated Dreamworks film Abominable.
Dove Cameron plays Bubbles, whose innocent and sweet disposition made her a favorite of many kids. She still sparkles as an adult, but her charming exterior belies an unexpected toughness and wit. She’s initially more interested in recapturing her fame than saving the world, but she just might surprise us and herself.
Cameron broke out as the star of the Disney Channel series Liv and Maddie, on which she played both of the title roles. The show earned her a Daytime Emmy Award in 2018. The actress is also known for playing Mal, the daughter of Maleficent in Disney’s musical Descendants franchise.
Yanna Perrault will be playing Buttercup, the badass of the crime-fighting trio. More sensitive than her tough exterior suggests, Buttercup has spent her adulthood trying to shed her Powerpuff Girl identity and live an anonymous life.
Perrault was most recently seen on Broadway in the Alanis Morissette musical Jagged Little Pill. She was also set to join the cast of Hamilton on Broadway before the pandemic shut down live theater. The series marks Perrault’s onscreen debut.
The Powerpuff Girls pilot hails from writers and executive producers Heather Regnier (Veronica Mars, Sleepy Hollow) and Diablo Cody (Juno). Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and David Madden of Berlanti Productions will serve as executive producers, alongside Warner Bros. Television.
