Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam has been casted to portray the notorious serial killer Ed Gein for the third season of true crime anthology series Monster.

In a report by Variety, series co-creator Ryan Murphy made the announcement during a promotional event for Monster Season 2, which centers on the conviction of brothers Lyle and Erik Menéndez for the murders of their parents.

Hunnam is known for his role as Jax Teller in the crime drama series Sons of Anarchy which ran until 2014. His other works include Pacific Rim, Crimson Peak, and Rebel Moon.

In case you don't know about the criminal he'll be portraying, Gein garnered much infamy beginning in 1957 when authorities discovered he had dug up corpses from local graveyards and made household items from their bones and skin. This included baskets, bowls, masks, belts, among others.

In addition, he also confessed to the murder of two women: a tavern owner in 1954, and a hardware store owner in 1957.

While Gein was initially diagnosed with schizophrenia and was deemed mentally unfit for trial, he was eventually judged competent to stand trial in 1968 and was found guilty of murder.

He then spent the rest of his life in a mental hospital until he eventually passed away at the age of 77 due to respiratory failure resulting from lung cancer in 1984.

Gein's story has since inspired numerous horror works in film, such as Psycho, House of 1,000 Corpses, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Silence of the Lambs.

Netflix's Monster series began with the life of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, who was portrayed by Evan Peters.

The first season became an immediate commercial success, achieving the top spot on Netflix in the first week of its release in September 2022. It also became the third Netflix series to pass one billion hours viewed in 60 days.

Apart from Hunnam's involvement, other details regarding the third season remain under wraps.

Meanwhile, MONSTERS: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story is set to premiere on Netflix on Sept. 19. It stars Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch as the titular brothers, respectively, with Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny playing their parents.
