Attention, Gumball fans! The Amazing World of Gumball will officially return with a new movie and series on Cartoon Network and HBO Max.

On Wednesday, Sept. 22, the official Twitter account of Cartoon Network tweeted that the Gumball movie and TV series have received the greenlight from Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, WarnerMedia Kids and Family’s flagship television animation studio within Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

Earlier this year, on Feb. 18, Cartoon Network announced on Twitter that the Gumball movie was in development.

The movie is directed and executive-produced by series creator Ben Bocquelet and the script is written by Coffee & Kareem writerShane Mack. They will also be joined by Sam Register, Vanessa Bookman, and Sarah Fell as the film’s executive producers.

The movie will follow the story of Gumball’s biggest fan who finds the show’s missing episode and accidentally opens a portal connecting his world to Gumball’s cartoon world. Upon meeting his heroes, the super fan teams up with Gumball, Darwin, and the gang to save them from a nefarious force overtaking Elmore, California, while inadvertently unleashing a threat of their very own.

The film will serve as “a bridge between the original series and the new one,” Deadline reported.

Head of Warner Bros.’ Kids & Family Programming Amy Friedman said in a statement, “Gumball is one of those rare characters who effortlessly seems to tell us the truth, make us laugh and unify people, and now Bocquelet returns to bring Gumball back where he belongs—on an interdimensional journey right back to the fans.”

The original series premiered on Cartoon Network on May 3, 2011, and concluded on June 24, 2019. The show ran successfully for 240 episodes across six seasons.

The Amazing World of Gumball also received numerous awards in the past years. Among those were the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) in which they won Best Animation and Best Writer under BAFTA Children’s Award category, Best TV Production at 2011 Annecy International Animated Film Festival, and Best Animated Television Production—Children and Directing in a Television Production category at the 2012 Annie Awards.

As of writing, the official date release of the film has yet to be announced.
