A continuation of the classic ’90s animated show Batman: The Animated Series is reportedly in development.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, actors Kevin Conroy (Batman) and John Glover (The Riddler) confirmed during the Los Angeles Comic Con that an upcoming audio drama podcast featuring the Dark Knight is in the works, with writer Alan Burnett and the show’s original cast members attached to the project.

“It’s a great script by Alan Burnett and it brings back the original cast,” Conroy said during the “History of the Batman” panel.

“The Riddler’s back, and he’s evolved in many ways,” Glover added. He understands he’s on the spectrum.”

Developed by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and Mitch Brian, Warner Bros.’ Emmy Award-winning show is considered by many as the “gold standard of animated superhero storytelling” and “one of the best depictions of the Dark Knight in any medium.”

The animated series originally aired from Sept. 5, 1992 to Sept. 15, 1995 for a total of 85 episodes.

Aside from Conroy and Glover, the cast members of the animated series also include legendary voice actor Mark Hamill (The Joker), Richard Moll (Two-Face), Paul Williams (The Penguin), Adrienne Barbeau (Catwoman), David Warner (Ra’s Al Ghul), Diane Pershing (Poison Ivy), Loren Lester (Dick Grayson/Nightwing) and Melissa Gilbert (Barbara Gordon).

Apart from the upcoming podcast featuring billionaire Bruce Wayne, there are other audio dramas that are currently available on Spotify, such as the original classic Batman TV series from 1966 which starred Adam West (Batman) and Burt Ward (Robin). Another scripted audio original is HBO Max’s Batman: The Audio Adventures with Jeffrey Wright playing the titular role.

In terms of other upcoming projects, it's been previously confirmed that a brand new animated series featuring the Defender of Gotham is also coming to HBO Max.

Last May, WarnerMedia announced that HBO Max and Cartoon Network have green-lit a straight-to-series order for Batman: Caped Crusader, an all-new animated series that will reimagine the character of the Dark Knight. The upcoming DC cartoon series will be executive produced by J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves and Timm.

“We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City,” Timm, Abrams, and Reeves said in a joint statement. “The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world."

Meanwhile, The Batman, Matt Reeves' highly-awaited retelling of the Caped Crusader starring Robert Pattinson, is due to hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
