Pixar reveals fluffy teaser for ‘Turning Red’

Pixar will tackle anxiety and overbearing parents in their upcoming project about Mei Mei, a teenage girl who can transform into a giant red panda when her emotions explode.

The trailer featured short clips of her adventure as a transformed giant red panda and how she tries to understand her newly found powers after her mother trespasses school grounds to spy on her.

The film will be directed by Oscar winner Domee Shi, the same director and writer of the short Pixar film Bao.

Bao, which was attached to The Incredibles 2, won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film in 2018 and has paved the way for Shi to collaborate with Pixar again.

The official synopsis of the movie reads “Young actress Rosalie Chiang lends her voice to Mei Lee, a 13-year-old who suddenly ‘poofs’ into a giant red panda when she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS). Sandra Oh voices Mei Lee’s protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming, who is never far from her daughter—an unfortunate reality for the teenager.”

Turning Red will premiere on March 11, 2022 but there is no confirmation yet as of this writing if it will be in theaters or a streaming service.
