Sony plans to produce 10 million PS5 units to meet growing demand - report

Sony is reportedly doubling production of its upcoming PlayStation 5 by as much as 50 percent to meet the increasing demand for gaming consoles spawned by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Citing people familiar with the plan, Bloomberg reported that the Japanese electronics company has informed its assembly partners and suppliers of its planned production boost in a bid to meet the “radically increasing orders” for its much-awaited next-gen console. Sony is expecting that the pandemic which forces people to remain indoors may possibly increase additional demand for its next-gen console.

The media outfit previously reported that Sony is planning to release limited units of PlayStation 5 as it anticipates lower demand because of the console’s price tag.

But the situation has dramatically changed after Sony unveiled its next-gen console last month. From its previous plan of manufacturing five to six million units, the company is now aiming to produce around 10 million units of PlayStation 5. Despite the boost in production, however, the report said that the company may still be unable to deliver enough units to the market during the holiday season release due to shipping constraints. 

The electronics company started the mass production of the PS5 last month. With its new plan to meet the growing demand for the console, the company expects to manufacture five million units “by the end of September and another 5 million between October and December.”
