TRENDING: How did Sarah Geronimo’s ‘Maybe This Time’ cover become a dance craze?

Who would’ve thought that a song about longing and second chances would become a dance trend on social media?

Sarah Geronimo’s 2014 cover of the timeless ballad Maybe This Time is currently making the rounds on TikTok—and it's not because of its wistful lyrics or heartfelt melody.

Internet users—including celebrities like actress Ysabel Ortega, actor Dennis Trillo, Stell Ajero of SB19, Sheena Catacutan of BINI, and two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo—have been taking on the fun challenge with the hit song playing in the background.

How did the dance trend start?

The Maybe This Time dance craze began when a TikTok user posted a video of him pulling off some playful and snappy dance moves to the song’s bridge:

“She's smilin’ like she used to smile way back then

She's feelin’ like she used to feel way back when

They tried, but somethin’ kept them

Waiting for this magic moment”

His video has garnered over 37 million views—with 2.6 million likes, over 215,000 saves, and over 24,000 comments—since it was posted in late July.

Other social media users started posting their own versions of the dance on their respective pages and continue to do so to this day.

Maybe This Time, the song

Maybe This Time was originally performed by American country singer-songwriter Michael Martin Murphey in 1983 as part of his album The Heart Never Lies.

Geronimo released her own take on the track for her film Maybe This Time, where she starred alongside Coco Martin. The romantic comedy offering directed by Jerry Lopez follows the story of two exes who meet again years after ending their relationship without closure.
