Eugene Domingo is joining the cast of the Philippine production of Into The Woods.
Theatre Group Asia announced on Jan. 27 that the Becky & Badette star will be playing Jack's Mother in the local production.
"Being one of the country's most acclaimed actresses both on stage and on screen, we can't wait for her to bring her unmatched talent to this beloved role," it said.
"I'm so excited to be part of this popular and critically acclaimed musical as Jack's mother," Eugene said in a statement, as per GMA News Online.
"I love that the material is inspired by fairy tales yet reveals a realistic twist we can all relate to. I love all the surprises [that] come after the characters are all put together. This one entertains as much as it teaches."
On Jan. 20, the theater collective announced that Filipino American Broadway star Arielle Jacobs will be playing the role of Cinderella. She's best known for playing Nina Rosario in the Broadway production of In the Heights and Princess Jasmine in the Australian and Broadway staging of Aladdin.
Also joining the two is Tony Award-winning actress Lea Salonga, who will play The Witch, a character she portrayed when she was 23 for the 1994 staging of the musical in Singapore.
Into the Woods, a Stephen Sondheim musical, will be staged from Aug. 7 to 24 at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Makati. There will be a limited engagement run of 18 shows.
First shown in 1986, the musical intertwines the plots of several fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm, including Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and Cinderella.
The show is tied together by a story about a childless baker and his wife, their interaction with a witch who had cursed them, and their encounters with the fairy tale characters.
It was adapted into a Disney movie in 2014.
